University of Maryland, Baltimore Cafe Renovation
JBC was back in action at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) during the summer last year in order to transform an existing cafe into a more useful and efficient space. Team members Greg S., Jaimie L., Steve T., and Grant S. worked alongside the architectural firm, Elite Studio, to complete the six-week renovation on the UMB campus. To learn more about the project, we did a short Q&A with Jaimie. Enjoy!
What did you enjoy about this project?
“Seeing the evolution of the existing cafe into a more student-friendly space was exciting to be a part of. The addition of self-serve kiosks, a sushi bar, Starbucks, and more, made the space more appealing to students.”
What was the main goal of the project?
“The main goal of the project was to complete a quick, one-month renovation to improve the flow of the space and make it more user-friendly for students. It also added capabilities to better accommodate students with disabilities through the use of new technology, allowing them to enjoy the cafe with ease.”
What is something unique about this project when compared to others you’ve been a part of?
“JBC is at UMB often, as we are currently working in the same building on another project, and college campuses are always a unique environment. The students are inquisitive about what you’re doing, as it affects a place they spend a lot of time in. We enjoy seeing their anticipation for the new space and the excitement once it’s revealed!”
