Community Spotlight: JBC Volunteers with Black Women Build-Baltimore
Nothing feels better than giving back to your community! Recently, the JBC team had the opportunity to deliver and hang drywall over the course of two days. We worked alongside the Black Women Build-Baltimore team in three of the homes they are currently reconstructing. Our team had so much fun helping and learning from this amazing group of women.
A special thank you to Centerline Construction Co., Janus Contractors, and Aegis Mechanical for donating over $6,000 worth of material… enough drywall for all three homes. We couldn’t have done this without their generosity!

What is Black Women Build-Baltimore?
Black Women Build-Baltimore (BWB) is a home ownership and wealth-building initiative that trains black women in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing by restoring vacant and deteriorated houses in West Baltimore. “Our goal is to create opportunities for Black women, and their communities, to thrive.”
BWB was founded in 2017 by Shelly Halstead, who set out to support women in their home ownership journey while teaching them trade-related skills through the renovation process. With a passionate belief in the power of knowledge, skills, and opportunity to shape a woman’s life, Shelley founded BWB on an intersectional framework. The holistic program is offered to capable women who are ready for change. One of Shelly’s main goals for the initiative is “to create wealth and build community by dismantling the barriers that work against our ability to thrive.”
