UMMS St. Joseph Medical Center – Fourth Floor Renovation
In May 2020, JBC team members, Kevin P., Julie G. & George M. completed work at the University of Maryland’s St. Joseph Medical Center, JBC’s first project with the hospital. This project began in October of 2019. An accelerated schedule was requested in April to open additional hospital beds for the anticipated surge of COVID-19 patients.
Scope of Work
We were contracted by the University of Maryland Medical System to renovate the 4th floor’s east wing which was comprised of 18 patient rooms and accompanying spaces. Those spaces included a nurse’s station, a food station, and patient suites, totaling 11,000 square feet. While some extra thought and coordination were needed in order to rework the existing electrical and mechanical systems, which required access to occupied spaces, the team all worked together to ensure there was no disruption to hospital operations and minimal disruption to the patients. Project Manager, Kevin P., was familiar with at least one of the neighboring spaces, as he had welcomed his second son in the maternity wing only a couple of months prior to starting this renovation!
Project Takeaway
This was one of several projects JBC was running during the COVID-19 pandemic. As you can imagine, flexibility and teamwork were critical to the project’s success and the safety of our team members. Since completing the project, we were excited to learn that St. Joseph Medical Center has since identified the design as the standard for all future hospital renovations. We are excited to see the hospital continue to grow and improve!
