UMMC Cobas Lab – COVID-19 Testing Equipment Installation
COVID-19 has presented countless challenges and obstacles in 2020, and the construction industry is no exception. Project schedules were accelerated, or put on hold, especially in the healthcare sector, as hospitals prepared to accommodate a surge of patients. While JBC experienced these schedule changes on numerous projects, we want to take time to highlight the Cobas Lab renovation project completed at the University of Maryland Medical Center in October of this year.
Scope of Work
JBC team members, Paul F. and Kevin C. started phase one of four in May 2020 which included a simple refresh of an existing lab to accommodate the new testing equipment. Subsequent phases addressed the major mechanical upgrades needed to support the two new Rosche Cobas 6800 analyzers. This equipment enabled expedited COVID-19 testing, significantly increasing the hospital’s capacity amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Modifications to the exhaust and HVAC systems for the heat and air supply were made and new ductwork was installed above the lab and in six adjacent offices. Support spaces were fitted out in the last phase of this collaborative and fast-paced project.
As the fight against COVID-19 continues, our team is grateful to have had the opportunity to play a small part in UMMC’s coronavirus testing capabilities. Check out the updates below!
