• UMMC - South Entrance Reception Desk

JBC was contracted by UMMC to construct a new reception desk to serve the hospital’s south entrance with approximately 10,000 SF of new terrazzo flooring in the lobby. Installing the new flooring required phased ICRA barriers throughout the lobby, covering approximately 5,000 SF to completely enclose the project site and contain dust during construction. One of the greatest challenges posed by this renovation was the installation of an overhead plastic ceiling to enclose the atrium. Metal wire was installed running from one side of the atrium to the other to support the heavy plastic. Additionally, there were partitions and column supports throughout the ICRA enclosure to keep it secure and sturdy. Midway through construction, JBC raised the barrier up and over the 2nd story bridge so construction of the new reception desk wall, which connects and extends above and to the bridge, could commence. This new layout will better serve UMMC’s patients, visitors, and the local community!

  • UMMC - Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Unit

The State of Maryland has been experiencing a significant psychiatric bed shortage for several years. To help meet the demand, JBC was contracted by UMMC as CM. This renovation included a full gut of 12,000 SF of space within the unoccupied 11th floor West Wing and 2,000 SF of selective renovation work within the occupied 12th floor West Wing. The new unit houses 16 patient rooms, a welcoming nurse’s station, dining room, conference rooms, group activity rooms, two sensory rooms, and two seclusion rooms. The pre-construction phase was key to the project’s success, as JBC worked with Inquiry | Architecture + Design to ensure the proper doors, windows, and finishes, specified for their safety rating and approved use in psychiatric spaces, were used. Anti-ligature, tamper-resistant materials, and shatterproof glass were some key materials in the space. The Unit goes beyond simply providing a space for patients in need of treatment and encourages the use of de-escalation measures taught in treatment through its layout and design.
