2020 Excellence in Construction Winner | ABC Greater Baltimore
Jeffrey Brown Contracting is proud to announce that we are a 2020 Excellence in Construction winner! Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Greater Baltimore has recognized JBC with a merit award for our work on the Johns Hopkins Hospital Brady Building Demolition, which we completed in August of 2019.
Brady Building History
The six-story building, with basement and sub-basement levels, was built in 1914 and funded by a generous donation made by Mr. James Buchanan Brady. Originally, the building was utilized by the urology department with floors dedicated to the research and treatment of related urological diseases. Over time, however, the building became unable to accommodate modern laboratories and clinical spaces due to its layout, limited access, old electrical and mechanical systems, and its inability to easily mold itself to meet new code requirements. Prior to demolition, the building was almost exclusively used as office and storage space.
The Demolition
With close proximity to other buildings and a major roadway, this project had unique challenges, leading to a strategic demolition plan developed by the owner, architect, JBC and our demolition contractor. This project was responsible for the razing; abatement; safety; road closures; dust control; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (“HVAC”) intake filtration; utility capping; protection of existing structures and hospital services and permitting, as well as the installation of the sheeting and shoring as required for site stabilization. Excessive dust, noise, and vibration were kept to a minimum out of respect for neighboring businesses and patient sites.

Why Was This Project Special to JBC?
The Brady Building demolition was the first major demolition project managed by JBC. This fact alone makes it a special project for the team. The demolition was not straightforward or typical either. With several complicating factors and great risk for safety threats, the importance of forward-thinking, strategic planning and consistent monitoring was significant. Managing a project of this magnitude and complexity without incident is a testament to the diligence of all team members from start to finish. Additionally, it is one of the larger contracts JBC has secured with our long-time client, Johns Hopkins Hospital. In a broader sense, JBC knows that this project was the first step in a major expansion of the JHH campus, a hospital system that has been supporting our local community since 1889.
A special thanks to ABC Greater Baltimore for this recognition, to our dedicated and professional JBC employees, and all other crews who we worked together with for a successful demolition of the Brady Building!
